Notes
- Journeys are estimated from ticket sales. Each train used counts as a journey, so a trip that needs a change of train counts as two. Where a passenger buys two or more tickets for one trip (split ticketing), each ticket counts as a journey; the ORR is working on an adjustment for this.
- Covers the national rail network: franchised operators and open access operators, such as Grand Central, Hull Trains and Lumo, which run without a contract from government. London Underground, light rail and Eurostar are not included.
- Before April 2003 the figures come from CAPRI, the industry's previous ticketing system, and from April 2003 from its successor, LENNON. Before April 1999 they leave out some operator-specific and multi-modal tickets.
- April to June 2019 includes about 6.5 million journeys made with TfL Freedom Passes and by the police over the previous year, and October to December 2019 includes an extra week of TfL contactless journeys (about 2.2 million).
- The ORR marks breaks in the series at April 1999, April 2011, April 2020 and April 2021. From April 2020 to March 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, journeys on season tickets were estimated by a different method. Figures from April 2020 are provisional.
