Notes
- Disposable income is what households receive (pay, self-employment income, pensions, benefits and investment income) minus what they pay in income tax, National Insurance and council tax. It is adjusted for the prices of what households buy, so it shows changes in what that income can buy.
- It is total household income divided by the whole population, so it is an average: it doesn't show how income is shared between households, or what a typical household has.
- The ONS publishes it for each quarter. Each point adds up the four quarters to that date, so it reads as a year's worth. Quarterly figures are volatile and often revised.
